ISO 45001 CertificationOH & S; Occupational Health and Safety

ISO 45001 is the world’s most popular standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S), which sets the requirements for an OH&S management system. It is the first international OH&S standard, combining years of industry OH&S best practices from all over the world into one single clear framework. It is particularly concerned with analysing an organisation’s potential risks and benefits in its day-to-day operations, using a process-based approach. Its aim is the prevention of workplace accidents through workflow improvement and the integration of OH&S into the fabric of organisations.

STEP 1

Preparation

Through the implementation of the standard’s systematic approach to worker consultation and participation, organisations can weave OH&S principles into their processes. This goes a long way in helping prevent accidents, leading to injury and ill health. The standard’s framework fosters a healthy safety culture climate within the organisation, resulting in improved well-being among workers.

STEP 2

Documentation

The standard dictates that organisations must maintain strict and controlled recordkeeping and documentation practices when it comes to any data pertaining to their OH&S management system. A standard format must be developed for all documentation, and any modifications and revisions must be traceable.

To be deemed compliant with the ISO 45001 standard, organisations must establish the following documents:

  • Scope of the OH&S
  • OH&S policy
  • Responsibilities and authorities
  • Addressing risks and opportunities
  • Methodology and criteria
  • OH&S objectives and plans
  • Emergency preparedness and response process

STEP 3

Implementation

For those who are not well versed in the structure and definitions of the standard, implementing an ISO 45001 compliant OH&S management system could prove to be a challenging task. Substantial resources must be mobilised and allocated to plan and execute the development and implementation of the various requirements of the standards.

Typically, OH&S system implementation is a success among organisations that recognise the importance of allocating sufficient time and resources to the process, and put great emphasis on maintaining the lines of communication open to encourage worker consultation and participation. Adequate processes must be put in place to ensure any relevant OH&S information is vehiculated across all levels of the organisation.

In-House

When an organisation decides to use its own resources to go through the certification process, without external assistance

Hands-off consultant

A hands-off consultant is in charge of making sure your organisation satisfies the certification requirements without actually implementing any changes themselves.

STEP 4

Internal audit

Internal audits are a tool used to systematically test-out the organisation’s processes and measure them against those required by the ISO 45001 standard. This process serves as a way to verify the effectiveness of the processes in place and confirm their adherence to the standard’s requirements. Regular internal audits help maintain organisations in alignment with OH&S objectives.

STEP 5

Certification

To achieve certification, a Registrar must be selected and engaged to perform the certification audit. This is where the Auditor inspects your OH&S systems to ensure that they satisfy the requirements of the standard. Wherever they deem that a requirement is not being met, they will record a non-conformance. The resulting non-conformances must be corrected for the certification to be granted. After achieving certification, to maintain it, you will be required to undergo surveillance audits at regular intervals to ensure that you continue to meet the standard’s requirements.
