ISO 14001 CertificationEMS; environmental management

All ISO management system standards offer the same essential benefits. They set out guidelines that lead to optimal internal organisational control, when implemented effectively. For example, an effective implementation of the ISO 14001 standard results in improved control over an organisation’s activities, goods and services and how they interact with the environment. Improved control goes a long way in reducing an organisation’s environmental footprint, which in turn positively impacts business sustainability and improves the regard stakeholders hold for the organisation.

The following 5 steps break down the certification process:

An environmental management system (EMS) is a formal framework that maps out the policies and processes required to help you achieve your environmental goals.

Documentation

During the initial implementation of an environmental management system (EMS), the most challenging part often lies in the lack of capable and knowledgeable employees to support the requirements of the EMS.

Although ISO 14001:2015 provides a clear indication of the documentation required, it is less prescriptive than its predecessors. Its requirements are as follows:

  • Scope
  • Policy
  • General
  • Environmental aspects
  • Compliance obligations
  • Environmental objectives
  • Competence
  • Communication - General
  • Documented information - General
  • Operational planning and control
  • Emergency preparedness and response
  • Monitor, measure, analysis and evaluation
  • Evaluation of compliance
  • Internal audit programme
  • Management Review
  • Non-conformity and corrective action

STEP 3

Implementation

The first step towards achieving ISO 14001 certification involves establishing the processes that will make up your environmental management system and developing the documentation as per the standard’s guidelines.

After implementing and testing out the new processes, an internal audit must be performed to assess the effectiveness of the implementation. This is done through a management review which must be carried out to identify the corrective actions necessary to be in alignment with the standard clauses.

In-House

When an organisation decides to use its own resources to go through the certification process, without external assistance

Hands-on consultant

A hands-on consultant is one that ensures takes the necessary steps to ensure your organisation satisfies the standard’s requirements. Their job is done when you achieve certification.

Hands-off consultant

A hands-off consultant is in charge of making sure your organisation satisfies the certification requirements without actually implementing any changes themselves.

STEP 4

Internal audit

Audits are an integral part of the certification process. Before ISO 14001 certification can be granted, organisations must undergo two types of audits. An internal audit, which is conducted by an internal auditor (employee) or an external auditor, hired for the job. On the other hand, the external audit is conducted in 2 stages by a Certification Body (CB) auditor who determines whether you meet the requirements for certification.

Audit Checklists

Audit checklist is a term used to describe a document that is developed during the audit planning phase. It contains a detailed list of all the action items that must be completed during the audit.

STEP 5

Certification

If you are granted certification, the Certification Body (CB) will send out an auditor at regular intervals during the 3-year certification period to conduct surveillance audits. The purpose of surveillance audits is to verify that your EMS continually satisfies the requirements of the standard. Any non-compliance identified will results in a non-conformance which will be documented in the auditor’s report. In order to maintain your certification, you must address these non-conformances by implementing the appropriate corrective action.
